There are documented cases in Europe of wood bowls continuing to be used regularly as that were turned or carved over 400 years ago. With minimal care and maintenance, there is no reason your wood product cannot have similar longevity.

Product Care

Basic Care:
All of our products have “food safe” finishes and can be used for their intended purpose. Products with flat finishes may be used with hot or cold foods. Products with gloss finishes are suitable for use only with cold foods.

Certain art bowls and similar creations, with bark edges, voids, checks, stone and other retained wood defects are delicate and their use with food should be selective. Washing, cleaning, food penetration and moisture penetration can damage such products.

All of our products are primarily made of wood and should never be exposed to excessive heat or flame, including microwave ovens. The wooden products should never be used as direct cooking vessels. Such exposure or use could result in product damage or fire.

Avoid extended exposure of the product to direct sunlight, which may cause “bleaching” of the wood or substantially fading of the natural color. Colors in all woods gradually fade over time, leaving a still distinguishable pattern of browns and blacks and a soft natural patina.

Wood utensils should be cleaned after use with food. Products with flat or gloss finishes, and without bark, voids or checks, may be washed in warm water using a regular dish detergent. Rinse quickly after washing then wipe dry immediately. The product should then be left to air dry completely. Avoid extended immersion in water to safeguard against water saturation damage. Art products, or any products not used with food may be cleaned by wiping with a moist cloth, dust cloth or similar household dusting method.
We recommend avoidance of cleaning products which introduce cleaning or other chemicals to the finish on the wood surface. Introduction of such chemicals may cause color changes, bleaching, wood damage and similar damage to the product. Most importantly, introduction of such chemicals could result in reactions rendering the finish toxic

The finish of the products can be maintained with occasional light applications of suitable oils and then buffing lightly with a soft cloth. Utensils used and washed regularly should be oiled after 3 to 5 washings and anytime any part of the utensil becomes “wood” dry to the touch. Products used or washed infrequently may go as long as 2 to 3 months without oiling, but should be oiled anytime the wood surface feels dry. Apply a light even coat of oil to all surfaces and then allow the oil to penetrate for 10 to 15 minutes before wiping dry. Use of a soft cloth to apply and wipe the oil is essential to avoid scratching or blemishes on the wood. Excessive oiling will not harm the product, but lack of this protection can lead to product damage. Where usage and washing are frequent, any edible oil may be used. Where the product is not used frequently or displayed only, use of mineral oil is recommended. If desired, a light coat of edible wax may be hand applied to the surface and buffed to the desired luster. Waxing will also serve to seal the product and minimize moisture loss from the wood. Bee’s wax, pure carnuba wax and similar edible waxes may be used.

Do not use edible oils, except mineral oil, on products displayed or used infrequently, as oils such as vegetable oils, olive oils and similar plant products can, over time, go rancid in and on the wood, substantially making the product unsuitable for any purpose. If in doubt, use mineral oil.
